The new year brings in quite interesting news every time. And this is something that is equally sad and is also an eye-opener. Jati Nayak, an 80-year-old resident of Puri who resided in the Mangalaghat, passed away on Saturday, 1st of January. After interviewing the neighbors, it came to light that they called the dead mother’s two sons after her demise. But they didn’t respond to her funeral rites.
So, her four daughters came to the scene and broke the barriers. All of her daughters have their own families. And their decision was to take the mantle of cremating their dead mother with proper rituals and preparations. The daughters took the responsibility of making all of the preparations for the funeral rites or cremation. Not just that, they were the ones who carried the body and took it to Swargadwara.
The Daughters did Beyond the Rituals
When the sons forgot their duty, the daughters decided to fulfill the final rites for their mother. They took the help of neighbors to prepare a pyre that could carry their dead mother to Swargadwara. Swargadwara is 4 km away from Mangalahat. And the four daughters carried that Pyre to cover this distance and finish the last rites for their mother.
One amongst the four daughters, Sitamani Sahu, says, “Our brothers were neglecting and avoiding our mother for ten years. They never let her stay with them and never asked her about her good health and food.”
This was a saddening reveal, but that was not it! She also says that “Before her death, she fell ill once and we daughters took her to hospital in an ambulance. And even then, the brothers were not giving their involvement.”
Another daughter, namely, Sushila Sahu, said, “My mother was living close to the house of my younger sister. As my brothers are not ready to take responsibility for their dead mother, we decided to complete the rite by ourselves.”
The Sad and Real Face of Humanity
Jati Nayak was a widow, and after the death of her husband, she became a street vendor to feed the family. All of the four daughters have their own families, and her sons were not living with their mother. They are living separately from their families. The sons were not at all taking care of Jati Nayak but were torturing her over time. It is the claim by their daughters!
Even after getting the information of death and completion of the funeral rites, the sons didn’t bother to even call and inquire. Hence, this is what destroys even the concern of humanity.
The media took an interview of a usual resident of Puri who says, “No son should ever think of forgetting his duty towards his parents. It is a piece of very sad news and is probably the death of humanity.”
Jati Nayak did give birth to brave daughters, who did take their responsibilities seriously. She was lucky to have such daughters in her life, who did break the barrier of traditions, as sons forgot their duties.
