Today, Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Donald Marles have begun his 4-day visit to India, aiming to strengthen the defence cooperation and engagement across Indo-Pacific Region.

Marles is the 19th deputy PM and the Defence Minister of the less than a month recently formed Anthony Albanese government. After landing in India, Marles will meet Union defense minister Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and other senior Indian officials.
The trip underscores the importance attached by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to relations with India, strengthening defense mechanisms, and signing bilateral ties.
Vision Ahead
Before departing for India, Marles described India as “one of Australia’s closest security partners.” They addressed his government is “focused on revitalizing Australia’s historically deep engagement with the partners across the Indo-Pacific.” Further, he adds, “Australia stands ready to work closely with India in support of an open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific.”
Marles, who will be in India from June 20-23, is confident enough to strengthen the strategic defense partnerships.
He added that he would be looking forward to meeting Singh, holding their first bilateral meeting, establishing peace cooperation, and signing a memorandum.
Praising India’s defense minister, he added to work effortlessly for the country’s benefit and help establish a healthy relationship between Australia and India.
Way Forward
Also, Marles will engage with the idea of national security and be a part of personnel interaction with the Armed forces officers. The Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2022, an Australian defense ministry event, will be tied up with India this year.
