Recently, a group of astronomers claim to have found the closest evidence of the existence of the black hole. They say that a star came too close to the black hole, defying the existence of a black hole. The scientists term the medium-sized objects of the star as the ‘missing link’, regarding the gradual change in the cosmos.
The scientific instruments used for the finding
The researchers state that they need only three apparatuses to identify the object. The first apparatus is the Hubble telescope, whereas the remaining ones are two different observatories.
Dr Dancheng Lin on the identification
Dr Dancheng Lin is an astronomer from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, US. He is the one in charge of the study and here are his official statements:
Initially, Dr Lin considers that the intermediate-mass black holes are very rare objects. Further, he cautions everyone about various alternatives that their team is working on. And, then he adds that they are carefully monitoring the movements of other nearby stars as well.
Moreover, Dr Lin says that this discovery was not possible in the absence of the Hubble telescope. Further, he affirms that there can only be two scenarios for explaining this destruction of a star. Either, it’s the black hole swallowing the star and shredding it into pieces, or it might be one of our Galaxy’s own cooling star.
Explanation of black hole: In brief
- A black is a rare phenomenon in space which doesn’t let any object, not even light, pass through it.
- In contrast to the name, the black hole isn’t empty but consists of numerous objects. These objects are tightly confined and present in limited areas, that provide a strong gravitational pull.
- Beyond the black hole, there exists another region of the cosmos called the event horizon. It is known to be impossible to prevent the effects of gravitational force beyond this ‘point of no return’.
- Sagittarius A* is the name of the central black hole of our own Milky Way.
Another astronomer from the same team, Dr Natalie Webb, sheds some more light on the discovery. Dr Webb says that continuous research will be able to reveal the existence of the intermediate-mass black holes. Further, she even states that their whole team of astronomers are working on a number of mid-sized black holes. Eventually, these studies will help in finding more star clusters, which are close to the black hole.
