According to a WHO report, globally over 15 million people are living with spinal cord injuries. To raise public awareness and help people protect their spine, Spinal Cord Injury Day is celebrated on the 5th of September every year. Since 2016, the International Spinal Cord Association has decided to celebrate this day. Its prevention committee chair has set “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord” as the slogan of 2024. According to the chair, spinal cord injuries arising out of violence top the list of causes globally. So, to build awareness among normal citizens, they took the decision.
Symptoms and causes of Spinal cord Injuries:
According to a report, 84% of all spinal cord injuries are traumatic SCIs. Because they happen by accidents, falls, sports injuries, and violence. Only 16% of the cases arise because of diseases, infections or congenital defects.
Symptoms of Spinal cord injuries can be loss of movement, loss of sensations, lack of bladder control, exaggerated reflex activities, trouble breathing or coughing, extreme changes in sexual activities, intense stinging sensation, etc.
Prevention measures for spinal cord injuries:
While the numbers of spinal cord injuries keep increasing day by day, it becomes essential to understand the prevention measures for this. Here is something you can do.
- Wearing seat belts while driving a vehicle is non-negotiable. It is also important for children. You can install child safety restraints as well.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You should avoid riding with someone who has alcohol or drugs.
- While you are inside the house, ensure to keep it clean. A large number of spinal cord injuries happen because of slipping or falling. So, be careful while walking around.
- Maintaining a good posture in your daily life can help in preventing spinal cord injuries.
- While lifting weights in the gym or during daily activities, you should focus on the right techniques. Because faulty techniques can cause severe spinal cord injuries. So, use your core and bend your knees.
