Bou Buttu Bhuta Review

Bou Buttu Bhuta is a film that was directed by Jagdish Mishra, and it stands out as one of the most important new movies in Ollywood. It is a horror, comedy, and drama movie released on 12 June 2025 with the Raja festival and is set in a rural Odia setting.

This movie has become an iconic success of Ollywood. Produced on a small budget of approximately 2-3 crore, it has earned more than 16-20 crore at the Indian box office, becoming the biggest grosser Odia movie in the history of Odia movies.

• The plot is about a fish farmer, Buttu (Babushaan Mohanty), in a village who desires to get out of his situation, and his mother, Ratnamala (Aparajita Mohanty), a sorceress, who has to deal with supernatural events that distort their lives. The spookiness aspect is dealt with in a surprisingly subtle way; the movie relies more on the atmosphere of suspense and the countryside folklore and emotional tension rather than a trademark combination of flashy scares.
• The strong point is the performances of the actors. Babushaan strikes a good balance between the elements of comedy, fear and emotional moments. Aparajita is a perfect mother who brings passion and sincerity. Another good addition to the ensemble is Archita Sahu. The background score and sound design elicit commendation as they increase tension and mood without being overbearing.
• On the other hand, other critics perceive the first half to be slow-paced and with some of the scenes being unnecessary. The climax had an impactful effect, and could have been edited. Moreover, horror fans will not be satisfied with the fact that the supernatural elements are not frightening enough.
• Bou Buttu Bhuta is a milestone in Odia films. It is not perfect, but it is a must-watch because of its good storyline, good acting, cultural accuracy, and follow-up. This one delivers on the horrors with heart, as opposed to jump scares.
